ð Gorean Books by Subject
ðĩ Scribes, Law, Records & Administration
Best starting books: Tarnsman of Gor, Assassin of Gor, Raiders of Gor, Kajira of Gor, Players of Gor, Mercenaries of Gor, Magicians of Gor, Warriors of Gor
Look here for:
- Caste of Scribes
- Scholars, clerks and record keepers
- Attorneys and legal Scribes
- City administration
- Documents and records
- Government officials
- Councils and political authority
- Law and legal procedure
Tarnsman is particularly important because it introduces the Scribe caste very early and describes its many divisions—from ordinary copying and clerical work to scholarship, history, geography, cartography and law.
For Lady Kati as a Magistrate and Scribe, I would put this subject at the very top of the reading list. Warriors of Gor is interesting among the later novels because its publisher description explicitly refers to “Scribes of the Law.”
⚖️ Government, Law & Politics
Best books: Tarnsman, Outlaw, Raiders, Kajira, Players, Mercenaries, Renegades, Vagabonds, Magicians, Warriors
Subjects include:
- Ubars
- Administrators
- Councils
- Home Stones
- Political authority
- Treason
- Citizenship
- City government
- War powers
- Occupation and conquest
- Political intrigue
Especially useful: Raiders for Port Kar's Council of Captains, and Magicians for the political situation in Ar.
ð Home Stones & Citizenship
Best books: Tarnsman, Outlaw, Raiders, Renegades, Magicians, Warriors
Subjects include:
- Meaning of the Home Stone
- Loyalty to one's city
- Citizenship
- Treason
- Exile
- Civic identity
- Relationship between an individual and a city
The Home Stone is one of those subjects that runs through the entire series rather than belonging to one particular novel.
ðĻ Castes & Caste Structure
Best books: Tarnsman, Assassin, Players, Mercenaries, Magicians
Five High Castes:
- Initiates — White
- Scribes — Blue
- Builders — Yellow
- Physicians — Green
- Warriors — Scarlet
Tarnsman is probably the single most useful starting point for understanding the basic caste system. It identifies Scribes as the second of the High Castes and establishes the diversity of occupations contained within a caste.
⚔️ Warriors & Warrior Codes
Best books: Tarnsman, Nomads, Assassin, Raiders, Marauders, Tribesmen, Blood Brothers, Mercenaries, Renegades, Warriors
Look here for:
- Warrior Caste
- Swordsmanship
- Honor
- Challenges
- Military service
- Loyalty
- Courage
- Combat
- Warfare
Tarl Cabot's story as a whole provides an enormous amount of material about Gorean concepts of warrior behavior.
ðĄ️ Assassins
Essential: Assassin of Gor
Also useful: Players, Magicians, Warriors
Subjects:
- Black Caste
- Assassin training
- Marks
- Contracts
- Professional killing
- Caste identity
- Weapons
- Discipline
If somebody asks a detailed RP question about Assassins, Book 5 should usually be the first place checked.
ð Physicians & Medicine
Useful books: Priest-Kings, Captive, Marauders, Beasts, Blood Brothers, Players, Magicians
Subjects scattered through the series include:
- Physicians
- Medical treatment
- Wounds
- Disease
- Drugs
- Stabilization Serums
- Birth control
- Gorean medicinal plants
There isn't really a single “Physicians of Gor” novel. Medical information is scattered through the books, which is one reason RP medical guides sometimes contain material that is extrapolated rather than directly stated by Norman. One detailed review of the novels similarly notes that medicine receives comparatively little attention.
⚪ Initiates, Religion & Priest-Kings
Essential: Priest-Kings of Gor
Also useful: Tarnsman, Outlaw, Captive, Marauders
Subjects:
- Initiate Caste
- Temples
- Priest-Kings
- Sardar Mountains
- Pilgrimage
- Religious ceremonies
- Superstition
- Relationship between religion and political power
Captive, for example, describes the custom in some communities of undertaking the pilgrimage to the Sardar.
ðĐ Free Women
Best books: Tarnsman, Outlaw, Captive, Hunters, Kajira, Magicians, Witness
Subjects:
- Veiling
- Robes of concealment
- Free Companionship
- Property
- Social expectations
- Political power
- Enslavement of Free Women
- Women of different castes
Outlaw is especially interesting because Tharna presents a radically unusual political and social arrangement.
ð Slavery & Kajirae
This is present throughout most of the series, but particularly:
Best books: Captive, Slave Girl, Kajira, Dancer, Witness, Prize, Conspirators
Subjects:
- Collaring
- Slave markets
- Training
- Slave houses
- Brands
- Slave clothing
- Dances
- Domestic slavery
- Pleasure slaves
- Work slaves
- Slave behavior
These books are particularly useful because several are narrated primarily from a woman's viewpoint rather than Tarl's.
ð· Taverns, Inns, Paga & Everyday Life
Best books: Assassin, Hunters, Players, Dancer, Renegades, Magicians
Look here for:
- Paga taverns
- Inns
- Food and drink
- Serving customs
- Entertainment
- Travelers
- Lodging
- Musicians
- Dancers
- Everyday interactions
For RP, Renegades is particularly useful because Tarl spends considerable time around an inn.
ð° Merchants, Money & Trade
Best books: Nomads, Captive, Tribesmen, Explorers, Players, Mercenaries, Smugglers
Subjects:
- Merchant Caste
- Coinage
- Markets
- Trade routes
- Caravans
- Commercial houses
- Contracts
- Goods
- Smuggling
- Long-distance commerce
Smugglers naturally becomes particularly useful for later-series trade and maritime commerce.
ðĒ Ships, Sailing & Port Kar
Essential: Raiders of Gor
Also useful: Marauders, Explorers, Mariners, Smugglers
Subjects:
- Ships
- Captains
- Ports
- Naval warfare
- Rowers
- Piracy
- Maritime commerce
- Sea travel
For Port Kar, go straight to Raiders.
ðĶ Tarns & Tarnsmen
Best books: Tarnsman, Assassin, Captive, Hunters
Subjects:
- Tarns
- Tarnsmen
- Saddles
- Flight
- Racing
- Military use
- Transportation
Assassin contains particularly useful material concerning tarn racing.
ð Wagon Peoples
Essential: Nomads of Gor
Subjects:
- Tuchuks
- Kassars
- Kataii
- Paravaci
- Bosk
- Wagons
- Plains culture
- Tribal customs
- Warfare
For this subject, Book 4 is essentially your Gorean reference volume.
ð️ Tahari & Desert Culture
Essential: Tribesmen of Gor
Subjects:
- Tahari
- Oases
- Desert tribes
- Kaiila
- Caravans
- Salt
- Water
- Nomadic culture
- Desert warfare
This should be our first book to check when you ask me whether something like “Taharian tea” is actually book-canon.
ðē Northern Forests & Panthers
Essential: Hunters of Gor
Also: Captive
Subjects:
- Northern forests
- Panther Girls
- Forest camps
- Hunting
- Outlaws
- Captivity
- Wilderness survival
❄️ Torvaldsland
Essential: Marauders of Gor
Subjects:
- Jarls
- Bond-maids
- Longships
- Mead halls
- Northern customs
- Warfare
- Religion
- Harsh climate
If an RP question concerns something supposedly “Torvaldslander,” this is the book I'd check first.
ðŠķ Barrens & Red Savages
Essential: Savages of Gor and Blood Brothers of Gor
Subjects:
- Barrens
- Kaiila tribes
- Tribal customs
- Warfare
- Hunting
- Trade
- Kinship
- Blood brotherhood
ðī Jungles, Schendi & Interior Gor
Essential: Explorers of Gor
Subjects:
- Schendi
- Ua River
- Jungles
- River travel
- Inland peoples
- Trade
- Exploration
ðū Kurii & the Larger Conflict
Best books: Marauders, Beasts, Tribesmen, Blood Brothers, Kur of Gor, Warriors
Subjects:
- Kurii
- Kur society
- Technology
- Agents
- The Steel Worlds
- Conflict with the Priest-Kings
For understanding the Kurii themselves rather than merely encountering them as enemies, Kur of Gor is particularly important.
ð― Priest-Kings & Gorean Technology
Essential: Priest-Kings of Gor
Also: Beasts, Kur
Subjects:
- Priest-Kings
- Nest
- Advanced technology
- Voyages of Acquisition
- Earth
- Stabilization Serums
- Why Gor remains technologically restricted
- Larger struggle over the planet
ð Pani & Eastern Gor
Main sequence: Swordsmen → Mariners → Smugglers → Rebels
Subjects:
- Pani culture
- Islands
- Swordsmanship
- Ships
- Eastern customs
- Political factions
- Warfare
- Rebellion
These are best treated as a connected later-series arc rather than four unrelated books.
⭐ Lady Kati's Scribe Reference Shelf
For your particular RP, I would make a smaller "working shelf" out of the 38 books:
1. Tarnsman of Gor — Scribes, castes, Home Stones and basic Gorean civilization.
2. Assassin of Gor — Ar, caste interactions and urban society.
3. Raiders of Gor — government, Council of Captains, Port Kar and civic authority.
4. Kajira of Gor — city politics and government.
5. Players of Gor — political intrigue, urban life and Scribes.
6. Mercenaries of Gor — Ar, government, military and political conditions.
7. Renegades of Gor — everyday life, travel, inns, citizenship and warfare.
8. Magicians of Gor — especially valuable for Ar, government, administration and political intrigue.
9. Warriors of Gor — worth adding because the later novel specifically brings Scribes of the Law into its story.
